Bloomsburg Holds Annual Wrestle-Offs
BLOOMSBURG - The Bloomsburg University wrestling team held its annual intra-squad match on Thursday night. 2005 NCAA qualifiers Mike Sees (Northumberland/Shikellamy), Jim Bertulis (Aston/Garnett Valley) and Mike Spaid (Perkiomenville/Boyertown) all got wins in the match.
125- 2005 NCAA qualifier Sees scored six points on three takedowns in the third period to seal a 17-4 major decision win over Justin Thomas (Hunlock Creek/Benton). In the first period, Sees got a quick takedown and three backpoints to take a 5-0 lead after the first period en route to the win. Thomas tallied two escapes and a reversal in the match.
149- Alex Conover (Mendham/Mendham) outlasted Darren Kern (Pennsburg/Upper Perkiomen) in a 6-4 win. Kern tied the match early in the third period, 4-4, but Conover scored on a reversal to get the win.
165- 2005 EWL Champion Bertulis got a quick takedown and pinned Frank Beasley (Oden, IL/Centralia). Bertulis pinned Beasley 1:23 into the match.
157- Less than three minutes into the fourth bout of the night, Aric Fuhrman (Spring Grove/Delone Catholic) got a quick takedown and pinned Jason Crawford (New Albany/Wyalusing Valley) at the 2:38 mark.
184- Nate Shirk (Middleburg/Middleburg) pinned Chris Swan (Saylorsburg/Pleasant Valley) in the fifth bout of the night. Shirk scored five points on a takedown and backpoints before pinning Swan at the 1:40 mark.
197- Jesse Hasseman (Franklin, IN/Franklin) got an 8-4 decision win over Blaine Cohick (Williamsport/Loyalsock). Hasseman took an early 4-1 lead after the first period and scored on two escapes and a takedown to win the match.
HWT-Despite an early 2-0 deficit, 2005 NCAA qualifier Spaid won by pin over Shawn Albert (Hatboro/Upper Moreland). Spaid took a 3-2 lead going into the second period before pinning Albert at the 4:29 mark.
133- Ricky Donald (Millville/Bloomsburg) took a 5-0 lead in the first period over Thomas en route to a 14-0 technical fall win.
174- In his second match of the night, Beasley got a win, scoring four points in the third period to get the 6-3 victory over Andrew Jordan (Newark, DE/St. Mark's). After a scoreless first period, Beasley got a takedown in the second to lead 2-0 going into the final period.
149- George Hickman (Wilmington, NC/Riverside) got a win in the final bout of the night, defeating Conover in a 5-3 decision. Hickman took a 2-1 lead going after the first period and scored three points in the second period to get the win.
The Huskies will host Pittsburgh in their home opener on Nov. 15 at 7:30 p.m. at Nelson Fieldhouse.
